Scrabble Two-Letter Words
0 valid 2-letter words, with point values — small words, disproportionate power.
This list pulls from our full site dictionary, which is broader than any single tournament word list (TWL and SOWPODS/Collins differ from each other, and our dictionary casts a wider net than either). Double-check anything unusual with the Scrabble Word Checker before you play it in a real game and start an argument you can't win.
Why 2-letter words matter more than their size suggests
Two-letter words are the connective tissue of a crowded Scrabble board. Once the board fills in past the opening moves, most of your best scoring opportunities come from parallel plays — laying a new word directly next to an existing one so that every pair of adjacent letters also has to form a legal word. Miss one, and your triple-word bingo turns into a challenge you lose in front of witnesses. (I teach 8th graders. I have seen worse public humiliations. This one's avoidable.)
This is also where the point values sneak up on you. A 2-letter word looks harmless, but QI, ZA, JO, and XU are quietly some of the most efficient scoring plays in the entire game — you're offloading a premium tile for almost no letter-count risk. Committing this list to memory is one of the highest effort-to-reward moves in competitive Scrabble, right up there with knowing your bingo stems.

Frequently asked questions
How many 2-letter words are valid in Scrabble?
Around 100, give or take a few depending on which dictionary edition you're playing under. It's a short list by word-game standards, which is exactly why it's worth memorizing — you'll reach for these words more than any others in the game.
Why do 2-letter words matter so much in Scrabble?
Because of parallel plays — laying a new word directly alongside an existing one so every adjacent pair of letters also has to form a valid word. Knowing your 2-letter words cold means you can drop a word next to your opponent's without accidentally inventing gibberish. It's the Scrabble equivalent of checking your work before turning it in, a habit I wish more of my students had.
What are the highest-scoring 2-letter Scrabble words?
Words with Q, Z, J, or X score highest — think QI, ZA, JO, and XU, each worth 9-11 points before multipliers. Land one of those on a double or triple letter square during a parallel play and you've quietly scored more than some entire opening turns.
Are 2-letter words the same in Scrabble and Words With Friends?
Mostly, but not entirely — the two games use different word lists, and a handful of 2-letter words legal in one aren't legal in the other. If you're playing WWF specifically, double-check anything unusual before you commit to it.
